Identify problems.: If the lining of the uterus looks thickened on ultrasound, the cells may be growing excessively or a fibroid or polyp may be within the cavity but not well seen because the cavity walls are collapsed around it. Injection of fluid will show if there is diffuse thickening (hormonal), thickening in one area only (could be retained placenta or cancer), or a fibroid or polyp.
