Yes: Major depressive episodes can occur in (unipolar depression) major depressive disorder or in bipolar disorder (bipolar depression). A hallmark symptom is diminished (or absent) interest/pleasure in all (or almost all) daily activities. This can include diminished interest and hence isolative behavior from family and friends. People who experience this should consider consulting their doctor.

Cognitive Distortion: Depression can warp or distort one's judgment so that everything appears bad, pointless, worthless, negative... Oneself, past accomplishments, family, friends, job, etc. Successful treatment can restore a balanced perspective and assessment of the "real" pro's and con's of a situation. Cognitive behavioral therapy (cbt) can helps person identify their off-base perceptions and cognitions.
