Not normal: No, it's not normal and yes, you might need root canal therapy. I recommend that you call your dentist, and asked to be seen in order to evaluate your tooth. Although i cannot say with 100% certainty without actually seeing you, it does seem very likely that you will need rct. Occasionally the filling can be removed, the nerve sedated with a medicated filling and the need for rct avoided.

Not normal...: I would call the dentist's office. They understand your particulars and may assist you in problem-solving. Some potential problems may be that the filling could require some adjustment if it is too high, or the nerve within the tooth may be adversely affected. I would not jump to conclusions; i would discuss this and be evaluated by your dentist.

Possibly: If a pulp cap, a medicine that should placed nearest the nerve, it might better on it's own. However, if the filling is hitting too high, it needs to needs adjusted. Lastly, if there was an communication to the nerve, a rct is envitable.

Deep filling = pain: Deep fillings can be problematic, and there is always a chance that you will need root canal therapy. You should call the treating dentist who can further advise you if you should proceed or wait.. Feel better soon.

What you need to do is to call your Dentist. There is a cause for the pain that must be discovered before it can be treated. The services of a specialist Endodontist may be advisable. Call your Dentist.
