Recheck: White blood cell (WBC) counts can change for many reasons. In the face of an infection, a high or low WBC count is common. It is relatively common for a viral infection to correlate with low WBC count, however there are people with a normally low WBC counts. Once your child improves from his illness have a WBC count repeated with a "manual differentiation" to make sure it is normal.

Call MD: If your child does not improve on antibiotics within 3 days or is worsening call your md. Wbc can be low during infections sometimes, but be sure to follow up and retest when he is well for 10-14 days to see if WBC returns to normal level.
