Ultrasound: Dvt or deep vein thrombosis is often diagnoses with an ultrasound of the affected limb. If the clot is suspected to be in the lung then a ct scan can be used. These scans can also be used to scan the legs as well. If you are concerned about having a DVT then you need to be seen by your pcp for further evaluation.

Ultrasound is best: As dr. Hertzman said, ultrasound is best but you might not need one. If your history is suggestive of a deep venous thrombosis (dvt), a blood test called a d-dimer can be very useful. If your d-dimer is normal, an ultrasound is probably not necessary. If your history is suggestive of a DVT and your d-dimer is abnormal, an ultrasound is a must.
