Specializes in Trauma Surgery

Depends: Your ability to tolerate an operation depends upon your symptoms associated with low blood counts. If you have high heart rate or low blood pressure, then you might need to consider a blood transfusion prior to surgery. Some patients can tolerate very low blood counts (5-7) but it carries a risk. You should talk directly with surgeon to discuss these risks. Open, honest conversations are best.

Depends: How much anemia a person can tolerate depends upon the person's overall medical condition. Your physician should know your medical history to determine your margin of safety for surgery.
