Who is right: Both are right... You need a crown. The private office is being cautious and wants to wait to make sure the root canal therapy does not give you problems. The dental school is being cautious and doesn't want the tooth to crack. I would have the current office file the tooth down a bit to take any pressure off of it. Give it a while to make sure the root canal does not have any problems.

Root canal: A root canal tooth is best crowned to increase it's longevity. It's a good idea to wait a while after a root canal procedure to crown the tooth. It's to make sure all is fine. Timing depends on the circumstances that the tooth needed the root canal to begin with. If root canal was done without any problem and the tooth is asymptomatic then it's ok to crown it soon.

The sooner the bette: If you are pain free, the sooner the better. I just came back form treating an emergency patient at night because she split her tooth that had root canal treatment and didi not crown the tooth in time.

Both: I don't know the entire situation but a crown is definitely needed but the time frame is correct as well, depending on the situation.
