Yes we all have 2: ): Tmj refers to the jaw joint... But it can also refer to a number of conditions related to the jaw joint or tmj. It is not however a diagnosis. Some common symptoms include jaw pain, pain with chewing, ear pain, noises when the jaw moves, and certain types of headaches. More information can be found at www.Aacfp.Org or www.Aaop.Org.

Start at the dentist: If you think you may have a problem with your tmj, go visit your dentist. Pain around the jaw joint could be from the joint itself, but it may also come from your ear, teeth, jaw muscles, or lots of other structures that can all cause pain that feels similar. The best way to find out if it is causing your problem is to have the experts evaluate it.

Triad of symptoms: 3 cardinal signs of TMJ dysfunction: joint noises, joint pain & limited oral opening. Self treat with soft diet, jaw exercises, massage, heat/cold, OTC pain meds. A splint or physical therapy would be next. Occasionally muscle relaxants, biofeedback. Xrays are done for diagnosis. Surgery usually reserved for serious symptoms not responsive to other treatments.
