Kidney function: The decision to initiate dialysis usually is based on several factors. First laboratory testing can be performed to estimate the glomerular filtration rate. In addition clinical signs are taken into account such as the presence of swelling, poor appetite, weight loss, and decreased level of functioning. Since these are not absolute criteria, there may may some variance in opinion between physician.

GET ALL FACTS: Dialysis is initiated based on signs and symptoms of the patient and lab results. There is no specific criteria when dialysis should be initiated. Docs decide on dialysis based on the patient clinical condition and their experience with treating such patients. You could ask for second opinion or have care conference with both the kidney docs and then decide about dialysis
