Please clarify: Are you saying you have a splinter causing swelling or are you asking if the swelling is caused by a splinter? If you know you have a splinter and your hand is red and swollen as a result, then you have an infection and that is an emergency. You should seek help immediately either way.

Possible infection: If you get redness and swelling around where you have a splinter, the first concern is the beginning of an infection. I would recommend an evaluation by a health care professional today. You may be placed on antibiotics. In addition, the splinter will need to be removed. Good luck!
