Bleeding: First, I am sorry for the loss of your father. Retroperitoneal hemorrhage is bleeding that occurs in the deep tissues of the pelvis or abdomen (behind the peritoneal sac). There are multiple causes. 1. Injury to major blood vessels. 2. Aortic aneurysm rupture. 3. Injury to kidneys. 4. Pelvic fractures. 5. Spontaneous bleeding, sometimes due to blood being "to thin" to clot.

Retroperitoneal: That is bleeding in the space behind the abdomen where the kidneys and aorta hang out. The most common causea of spontaneous hemorrhage are tumors, anticoagulation and aortic rupture from a aaa.
