Dr. Peter Lio answered

Maybe: Maybe that benign growth is in the ear canal and they are worried that it will affect his hearing? I'd have him see an ear, nose and throat specialist to get more information and, if it is what it seems to be, get it removed. That may allow the navy to reconsider. Good luck!

Military standards.: Please see the standards at this site: http://usmilitary.About.Com/od/joiningthemilitary/a/intmedstandards.Htm. An external ear deformity that prevents or interferes with the proper wearing of hearing protection is disqualifying. There could be concern about developing deafness.
