Swelling: When you lay on your back your chin is esentially the highest part of your body off the ground. Swelling is water and water runs down hill.

Normal or abnormal?: It is not unusual to have some swelling for several months. However this should be generally revolving and improving. If it is not, i would definitely discuss with your surgeon.

Swelling postop: Swelling after surgery tends to come and go and when patients are sleeping and at rest the swelling tends to resolve. Once the awake and start doing more swelling tends to worsen. If this is bothering you or not getting better you should check with your surgeon! best of luck!

Edema : Swelling always increases when the affected area is dependent. When you are lying supine, the swelling resolves only to return once again when you are upright and the chin is in the lower position with relationship to the head. This should resolve over time.
