"Scaly": By definition, these mimic the squamous epithelial surfaces of the body that provide protection. Keratin pearls, prominent desmosomes, apoptosis of individual cells, staining for the distinctive molecules in these surfaces all help us define these entities.

"Lining" Cancer: Squamous cell cancers arise cells that line or cover different organs. They commonly start in the skin, but can also arise from the lining of the lungs, esophagus, mouth, tongue, throat, voice box, anus, cervix, vagina, or other organs. The diagnosis is made by looking for characteristic features of the cells under a microscope. Some are caused by hpv (human papilloma virus).
