Why?: Teens and twenties are the first times that someone with schizophrenia is often noticed. But just because a cousin had schizophrenia does not mean that your daughter does. I would recommend that you consult a doctor to clarify why you can't understand her and what's going on.

Genetic?: Schizophrenia can be genetic in terms of inheriting a set of vulnerable genes. It is not 100%. People who suffer from the cardinal symptoms including hallucinations and delusions need to be evaluated by a physician. Although in retrospect there may be a pattern of early symptoms these are too vague to make a diagnosis in their midst.

Common for that: Illness. Disorganized speech and meaningless conversation happens in that condition. Spend time with her to understand what she means. Let her use sign language and write out what she means, sometimes your intuition can tell you what is the meaning of what she is saying or why she is saying what she is saying.
