A member asked:

My daughter is getting her first iv for surgery and she is 9 any ideas on how to distract her while they put it in she hates needles?

A doctor has provided 1 answer

Sedation first: If you're at a regional or community pediatric hospital, the medical staff will know exactly how to ease a child's anxiety and stress prior to a procedure. Most children's hospitals should provide her with an oral sedative or anxiolytic medication. There are options for conscious sedation which uses gas and once she is asleep, they will insert the IV. They can also apply a local topical anesthetic
