A member asked:

Hi dr. my husband had a bowel obstruction and had a nose tube, till 11 nov. is it normal, that he still has stomach cramps and feel discomfortable?

A doctor has provided 1 answer

Yes: Bowel obstructions are commonly caused by scar tissue from prior abdominal surgery. Many times an acute episode will resolve with nasogastric tube placement for a few days-until the patient starts passing gas or bowel movements resume. Can certainly have recurrent episodes. Sometimes it requires surgery to break up the scar tissue if the GI tract does not open up.
