A member asked:

How long after getting a cartilage implant can you walk on your own?

6-8 weeks: Usually weight bearing is limited for 6-8 weeks so cells have time to grow where placed. Motion begins right after surgery unless the kneecap is involved; then motion is limited for 6-8 weeks too. At 3-6 months training can increase in load and intensity. At 1 year sport specific activities can begin. At 16 months most athletes can return to full sport. Your surgeon can outline your rehab best.

Best to ask surgeon: Cartilage restoration surgery performed on areas of the joint that bear weight and feel compressive forces during walking need to be protected to allow the cartilage implant the best chance for healing and clinical success. Crutches would routinely be prescribed for about 6 weeks.
