Eustachian tube: When you swallow, a muscle called the tensor veli palatini, opens the eustachian tube and air from the back of the nose (not really air but gases of oxygen, nitrogen and carbon dioxide) travel into the middle ear and the ear drum pops. This is a normal physiological phenomenon. The ears should not hurt when you swallow. See an ENT doctor for diagnosis and treatment.
