Maybe: One way that we deal with traumatic experiences is to repress (unintentionally avoid) the memories associated with the experience. Since children often do not have the psychological resources necessary to process trauma on their own, repression occurs. When a person then matures and becomes more able to process the feelings connected to the trauma, old memories from the experience can surface.
