Meds can be used.: In some cases medication is, in fact, used to treat ptsd. But, just because it can be used does not mean that it will be used.

Sometimes: It depends on the age of the child and the extent of the problem. In general, i avoid any habit forming medications in the children i treat. There are both the acute & chronic forms of ptsd. One goal is to treat the condition while it is acute to prevent it from becoming chronic. Sometimes, psychotherapy alone is beneficial in resolving the matter. Good luck.

Sometimes: Medication is not the primary treatment of choice for the core of childhood ptsd. Psychotherapy, or "talk therapy" (or play therapy in younger children) is the primary treatment. That being said, medications are sometimes used short term to reduce anxiety to help the child to tolerate the anxiety associated with therapy, or for specific symptoms such as sleep difficulties. Best wishes.
