Probably: You just need to take one of them. I tell patients that a centrum or one a day or two flintstones chewables are just as good as an super expensive, designer prenatal vitamin.

Depends : If the daily supplement is a multi-vitamin the combined copper in the two vitamins might be excessive. If it is b vitamin one would want to check the total amount of b vitamins to make sure the levels were not more than the liver can metabolize in an hour. In the first trimester avoid herbal supplements. Additional vit d might be helpful in the winter months.

Yes: Absolutely! especially if your diet is low in calcium. Talk with your doctor about the appropriate amount if you are unsure. In addition, all nursing mothers should continue to take prenatal vitamins at least until your baby has weaned from the breast.

Do I need to give my baby an iron supplement?

Dr. Shannon Cole
Pediatrics 25 years experience
Yes: If your baby is breast fed i recommend starting polyvisol with iron, 1 dropper per day, for the entire first year of life starting at 1 week. This covers the needs of vitamin d and iron for the breast fed baby. If your baby is formula fed on a fully iron-supplemented formula, additional iron is usually not required.
