See below: Darwin labarthe wrote a book called the epidemiology of cardiovascular disease, there is a chapter on hypertension. Basically, it increases you get older and gain weight. It is more common in african americans and those with high salt and poor diets rich in fats and starches. It is also common in those with kidney problems and those with sleep apnea.

Yes: According to nhanes, there is a mean prevalence of 29% in the us population> 18 years old. (7% age 18-39, 66% age >60). Prevalence is higher in western europe. Prevalence rises with age. Younger people tend to have affect the diatolic number while the elderly tend to affect the systolic number. There are whole books on this subject.
