A : A packing may be placed in the throat to prevent this. Also if you are asleep under general anesthesia, the breathing tube will block the blood. Finally, a rhinoplasty is a relatively bloodless procedure so it is easy to control.

As : As you are resting on your back, under general anesthesia or conscious sedation, bleeding will flow in the direction of gravity. This will be towards the back of your nose and to your throat. This will be removed (suctioned away) before the end of the case or absorbed by a removable packing (if placed there). If you are fully asleep (general anesthesia) then there is a tube protecting your airway and allowing you to breath. Be healthy and be well, james m. Ridgway, md.

It : It is common for the airway to be protected during rhinoplasty surgery with a breathing tube of some sort. This prevents blood from going in the windpipe. The blood is then suctioned before the tube is removed.

A little: If you are under general anesthesia your airway to the lungs is protected from blood entering it by the breathing tube. It can also be protected with a laryngeal mask. We also inject vasoconstrictors to minimize bleeding during surgery.

Not necessarily. : There is some bleeding during rhinoplasty but various methods prevent blood from flowing into your airway. Sometimes packing (gauze) is placed to prevent this. Other times the breathing tube is in place and prevents blood flowing down the wind pipe. Fortunately we have been performing rhinoplasty for decades and plastic surgeons and anesthesiologist a know how to prevent this from being a problem.

Bleeding is minimal: Bleeding during rhinoplasty is generally quite minimal. Your anesthesiologist and your surgeon will work together to prevent blood in the back of the nose or throat causing problems.

Bleeding in surgery: The nose and oral cavity are both linked to the pharynx so technically blood can go into your throat during surgery. There are maneuvers like a throat pack and inflating the balloon of the endotracheal tube or laryngeal mask to prevent blood from going into the trachea. In most cases, blood loss is very low and not an issue.
