Is : Is this your daughter's lower front tooth? The age for that tooth to exfoliate is about 5 1/2 years old, +/- 6 months. It could be that the root has resorbed an the redness is the gum tissue or a little blood underneath what is left of it. It may be hurting because the secondary tooth is erupting underneath it. Your best bet is to have it checked out by her dentist , who can "wiggle" it out and allow the pernament tooth to erupt.

Dr. : Dr. Davantzis' advice was spot on. It is the appropriate time for your daughter's front teeth to begin to fall out and be replaced by her permanent teeth. When the baby teeth loosen they may be tender. The red color is due to the fact that the root of the baby tooth is now fully resorbed and your are seeing the color of the gum tissue showing through. Check to see if the tooth has some movement to it. If so encourage her to wiggle it to help it fallout. If there is no progress have her pediatric dentist evaluate her as soon as possible.

Is it loose?: When adult teeth push down on baby teeth they "eat up" the root. Sometimes when that happens it will fill in with gum tissue, making it appear red. It's a sign that the tooth is ready to fall out. Is it loose?

Normal: It's getting ready to fall out. Root of tooth has dissolved away, and you are seeing capillaries through the enamel. 5 is a little early to loose a tooth, so take her back to dentist for evaluation. And take her to orthodontist @ age 7 for 1st ortho examination.
