You : You would need an examination to assess whether you're a candidate for septoplasty. A good candidate for surgery is someone who has symptomatic nasal blockage or deviation of the nose and significant enough deviation to make a meaningful improvement with surgery.

In : In addition to the other contributors, i would add that surgery would be considered if a patient has failed an aggressive trial of medical therapy to help his/her breathing and/or is unwilling to take medication to achieve that endpoint. Clearly, a targeted examination is needed to be sure the cause of your breathing problem is attributable to the septum and not something else that needs to be addressed.
