A member asked:

Do children need sealants for both six year and twelve year molars? i never had sealants as a kid, was told by a friend that our daughter will probably need sealants placed on both her six year and twelve year molars. is this likely the case?

As : As prevention is always better than treatment sealants are a good idea for any molars that have deep grooves and are exposed to the elements. This is especially true if your daughter is cavity prone.

Yes: Sealants help protect the deep grooves on the chewing surfaces of back teeth, like six year and 12 year molars, from tooth decay. We didn't get them as children because they were not around then. They reduce chance of tooth decay by about 80% for each tooth sealed. They are easy to place and less expensive then a filling.

Good Idea: Dental sealants help reduce the risk of developing cavities on the biting surfaces of teeth. Doesn't matter how old you are, they do the same thing.
