A member asked:

Can anyone use invisalign? i never had braces as a kid, and feel like i have very crooked teeth, especially on the top. i would like them straightened, and something like invisalign would be ideal. i've read that it only works on people who have slightly

No, : No, that is not true. Slightly is not a scientific term and there are specific guidelines that determine the suitability of invisalign for a particular situation. I have done invisalign on mouths that looked quite crooked but fit within the parameters. Find a good gp or orthodontist and consult with them to see if it will work. It's great if you're a candidate!

Invisalign : Invisalign is not the most versatile tooth straightening device. It does some things very well ( even better than braces) while it is less efficient for other types of tooth movement. It is the doctors job to diagnose your problem and lay out what your options are. Don't be discouraged, the pathway to your beautiful smile might be less complicated than you think!

Yes: Most crooked teeth can be fixed with invisalign. In some extreme cases the use of braces might be needed in addition to invisalgn.

Depends on each case: The only way to determine if clear aligner treatment is for you is to make an appointment for an examination with a licensed orthodontic specialist. Everyone's orthodontic needs and requirements are different. Invisalign can certainly be used to treat a wide range of problems.

NO: Your question has two opposing concepts, very crooked and slightly. If you have very crooked teeth (impossible to tell over the internet), it is a safe bet that traditional braces will more effectively correct the problem in less time. Invisalign (even with new additions) is basically a "tipping" method of moving teeth. If your teeth are very crooked, then no, you would be better off with braces.

Wrong choice: Invisalign appliances have very limited benefit, less than half what can be accomplished with braces. See an orthodontic specialist for an initial consultation (often free) for advice. Let the specialist advise you as to what treatment options (and therefore what treatment appliances) would be best to resolve your malocclusion.

No: After 30 years of practice I am not an advocate of invisalign. The results are less than ideal and long term stability is not there. I do not use invisalign in my practice. It is a great practice builder, but I do not think it is ones best interest. I'd rather do nothing.

Yes, if u have teeth: Though i agree that invisalign is not as accurate as full braces, and often require braces anyway to finalize, invisalign is great for simple realignments. Best if alignment of the jaws is ideal, but certainly acceptable in many cases. Case selection is mandatory, so full training is necessary. Get a couple of opinions before commencing elective treatments.

Use, yes. Best, no.: As a general dentist who only refers patients out for orthodontic treatment, here is my perspective, both from results that I have seen and from a number of fine orthodontists that i highly respect. Invisalign has some features that attract many patients. It is always key to find a qualified orthodontist who uses both and then discuss what is best for you. Also see comments below.

No: It will only work with certain cases. Consult a couple of orthodontists and see what treatment would be best for you. Invisalign is a great product and works for lots of people, not just everyone.

Depends: The answer to your question is that you need to see a dentist that does invisalign to have an evaluation. They can give you a good idea if you are a candidate or not. Invisalign can work on very crowded teeth, but it may not be the ideal treatment.

Invisalign can be: Used for a number of different malocclusions, but the technique often cannot move teeth in ways that traditional brackets and wires can. Since it is unknown how bad your malocclusion is, see a local orthodontist for a consultation.

Not for all cases: The success of invisalign treatment is dependent upon the degree of difficulty of the case as well as the expertise that the doctor has in using the appliance. In many cases, braces are a better treatment choice. Ask the doctor whom you select to conduct your treatment as to which treatment modality best suits your needs.
