The : The major indication for septoplasty surgery is to improve nasal breathing function when appropriate medical management has failed and you have a deviated septum of clinical significance attributed to that blockage. This may include trials of nasal steroid and/or antihistamine sprays, oral decongestant and/or antihistamine medications, or trials of short-term oral steroids to help shrink the polyps. Occasionally septal surgery is recommended in polyp management for surgical access to the sinuses (typically done endoscopically). Certainly, if allergies are not able to be controlled with medical management of this sort, referral to an allergist for testing and consideration of immunotherapy (i.e., allergy shots) would be appropriate.

The : The main reason one has a septoplasty is to improve the airflow in the nose. It may also be necessary to allow better access for sinus/polyp surgery. Whether surgery is worth it depends on how deviated your septum is and how much your symptoms are from this rather than your allergies. Another thing to consider is whether you may also be helped by having a turbinate reduction.
