It : It depends on 1) how badly torn it is, and 2) your age, and 3) your level of activity. If you're in your 90's and sit around watching soaps all day and it's a small tear, a cast will be fine. But if you're 17 and have hopes to get into the olympics, and the tear is significant, surgery is the way to go. I realize i've given you extremes here, and i know you're somewhere in the middle. I think this is the perfect reason to get a second opinion. In general, the younger and more active and worse tears require surgery more than small tears in old folks who aren't that active. Hope this helps.
