Complications : Complications that can develop after IV starts include infection, bleeding, or thombosis (clotting). There are all well known complications that can occur after any IV start, even if perfect technique is used. If a patient has pain or symptoms after an IV then they should be re-examined to rule out a problem.

CT scan: A ct scan of the neck may be warranted to rule out any bleed from the IV insertion procedure. It's of course possible that a bleed was caused and this resulted in a collection of blood in the neck and is pressing on some nerves in the neck. A ct scan can see that blood collection if it exists.
