If : If your jaw is clicking and popping then yes there is altered function in the temporomandibular joint (tmj). Without examining you or having any other information, treatment type or cost is not able to be given. Don't shop around...Go to someone who has expertise is this type of therapy. While this doctor may "cost" more to treat you correctly...It will certainly be less expensive than having several people charge you multiple times for incorrect therapies. Also, what is the "cost" for you to be in discomfort for a longer period of time? There are many financing options available, so talk the doctor or the financial coordinator of the office you choose to discuss how treatment can work into your budget.

Depends: The type of treatment depends upon what is wrong... Tmd is a group of disorders and without a specific diagnosis it cannot be treated effectively. Find a dentist that can diagnose and treat the problem. Many times medical insurance will help cover costs. Rarely does treatment involve surgery or expensive dental care.

Consult: Best advice is for you to have a consultation to help determine your treatment options from radical to conservative, less to more expense. As you are probably aware, if you try and treat yourself with home remedies and otc meds, exercises and mouthpieces, you may cause irreparable damage that cannot be reversed.

Yes: Yes, can be expensive. Medical insurance may cover. At least get a consultation from a TMJ expert for advice. Any dentist can be a TMJ expert with the proper training and experience. Most commonly, oral surgeons, prosthodontists, and orofacial pain specialists. Ask your MD, your dentist and your dental society for referrals.
