Cirrhosis : Cirrhosis can be caused by many different things, including infections like hepatitis, alcohol abuse, bile duct abnormalities, and metabolic problems. As liver function worsens, there can be an impact on the kidneys, a condition called hepatorenal syndrome. Treatment depends entirely on the underlying cause of the liver disease, and can range from simple medications to liver transplantation. Without more specific information, this is a difficult question to answer except in very general terms. Your best bet would be to meet with a hepatologist to review your husband's specific case: he or she could go over exactly what to expect and why your husband is taking the medications he is. An internist or family medicine doctor would also be a great resource if, in your area, there is no dedicated liver specialist.
