You : You should contact the treating dentist for prescription medicine, but some doctors do not write for narcotic pain-killers. If his dentists refuses to write for a narcotic pain-killers, ask for prescription strength ibuprofen, if your husband can take it. With some medical conditions and medicines, Ibuprofen can not be taken. If you get nothing from his dentist, he may need to go to the hospital. Your husband can rinse with warm salt water to help with the pain caused by the bacterial infection that is most likely present. But, in the first 48 hours following the extraction, he must rinse very gently so to not rinse out the clot(scab) forming in the tooth socket(hole) in the bone. He should have been give post-op instructions. If your husband had the teeth pulled 2 or more days ago, he may have a "dry socket". Call his dentist for an emergency appointment. If he can take ibuprofen, give him 2-200 mg tablets every 4 hours until he sees his dentist.

Orange : Orange city, the obvious answer is to find a new husband, sorry, i couldn't resist. I will normally prescribe 800mg of Motrin every 6-8 hours for the first 48 hours. If it was a traumatic extraction, i will also add vicodin to the mix. If a dry socket (pain that the narcotic doesn't help) has set in, i will have my patient in asap to pack medicament into the site. You need to call his dentist. Hope this is helpful, michael i. You : You really should contact the dentist who pulled out your husband's tooth. Depending on the pain level he is experiencing, the dentist may suggest your husband come into the office for a quick check to make sure everything looks good. At this point the dr. Will decide what medications he would prefer your husband to take. He may suggest motrin, since it is over the counter or give him a prescription for something a little stronger.

How : How many days ago did he have the teeth "pulled" was it today? Your husband should have a prescription from the dentist who helped him so that he could pick up a strong pain killer from the pharmacy. Perhaps that did not occur. Another question, if it is more that 24 hrs since the teeth were removed, is he using a salt water mouth rinse the slow down the bacteria. (salt water pickles the bacteria and really makes a dent in their ability to cause infection and pain). You can try the over the counter medicaments like tyleonol and advil (ibuprofen) together. Two of each immediately and then again in four to six hours. Why not call your dentist and ask him to help you out. He probably has a 24hr service so you should be able to reach him. Dr neil mcleod dds dentistry that lasts - quality that counts.
