Can a frenectomy alter a person's smile? our dentist has recommended that our son have a frenectomy performed on his upper lip. i'm worried that this might permanently change the way his smile looks. am i worried about nothing?

Most : Most likely this procedure will not alter your smile. In very rear situations, when the upper lip is short and the frenum is clipped only and not excised properly, the remnant of the frenum can roll out during smiling. This problem can be easily corrected with a minor surgical procedure.

Frenectomy : Frenectomy will never alter a smile unless it connects to the tip of his lip (very rare)and if this is the case it will only help retrieve a beautiful hidden smile ;-) don"t worry and follow your doctors recommendations. Good luck!

Will not: Upper front frenectomy will not alter smile. It will remove excess gum tissue from between upper front teeth. Current thinking among orthodontists is that frenum should be left alone until after front teeth are ideally positioned with braces (as a tween-teen), then have a periodontist (gum specialist) reshape the frenum. If your child is 7 or older, consult w orthodontist before scheduling fren.
