Phemphigoid : Phemphigoid is a dermatologic condition that usually appears as large, fluid-filled blisters typically on the innerside of the cheeks. This condition occurs when the layers of the mucosa separate and fill with a fluid. These blisters (bullae) then pop exposing the raw underlying tissue causing pain. This condition occurs due to the immune system attacking the basalar layer of the mucosa. It is not known why the immune system does this. Diagnosis requires taking a sample of the tissue for histological analysis. Treatment usually involves drugs that suppress the immune system. This disease is rarely life threatening, except in individuals in poor health or in people with otherwise poor immune system function. Becasue this is an immune system problem it cannot be transmitted to existing family members. It may be passed to offspring thru a genetic defect (which cannot yet be identified). Evaluation by a board certified oral and maxillofacial surgeon or oral medicine specialist is highly recommended.
