Abreva is sold over the counter to treat viral cold sores. Read the packaging and determine if it is best for your situation. Limit mouth contact to others until sores are healed to reduce risk of spread.

By far the best treatment for recurrent outbreaks of oral herpes (cold sore) is a single 2.0 g dose of valacyclovir (Valtrex and generics). If your baby is under a month old, be exceedingly cautious: absolutely no kissing, keep your hands away from the cold sore, wash hands frequently and always before contact with the baby. Herpes of the newborn is extremely dangerous. Also inform pediatrician.
