How could a lung become paralyzed?

Phrenic Nerve: Injury to the phrenic nerve (the nerve that controls the diaphragm) can result in paralysis of the muscle that moves air in and out of the lung (the diaphragm); most people with unilateral/one sided phrenic nerve injury are asymptomatic unless they have underlying lung disease.

Diaphragm: The diaphragm can become paralyzed if it's nerve supply, the phrenic nerve, is injured. A diaphragm plication may be needed to improve symptoms.
