Early on, yes.: In the early postoperative period, i advise my patients to stay away from "large bolus" foods like steak until the swelling around the esophagus decreases: think of scrambled eggs as the ideal consistency of food. I also strongly recommend staying away from carbonated beverages as it is sometimes difficult to burp early on. By 3-6 weeks after surgery, most people tolerate all foods.
