A member asked:

Is every dentist in brooklyn only interested in doing cosmetic procedures before fixing my most painful teeth first? i have two separate areas, (one on top left, and one bottom left) where there's a space in-between one, and a hole in the other, that's al

Our : Our practice's general rule is discomfort and function first, cosmetics second(but it's usually the patient who wants cosmetics first). That being said, it's not always simple to figure out where the discomfort is coming from if there are multiple problems occurring at the same time. Often if there is a lot of debris(tartar and calculus) and inflammation around the teeth and gums we may want to do a light cleaning and review the patients oral hygiene methods before going further to better evaluate the problem. The issue sometimes is not what is done first but the communication and the explanation of what services are going to be done and why.

I : I am sorry to hear that you are having this problem. I encourage you to revisit one of your dentists and to try and communicate yoru concerns again. If this doesn't work, you need to try other dentists until you find one that you can communicate with easily and will listen to your concerns. It's important that you find a dentist that you can communicate with well and trust. Mutual respect is necessary in order to create a partnership to improve your health.

Keep looking: I can't speak for all the dentists in brooklyn, but i know that key to our training as dentists revolve around treating our patient's chief complaint(s) first. I am privileged to teach in a post-graduate program and have had the pleasure of training many fine young dentists educated in ny schools! that holds true of them and so i'd suggest you try some other offices or go to the nyu dental school.

No: Most dentists are more concerned with taking care of infections, decay, and/or pain prior to doing cosmetic procedures. Make sure your dentist listens to your primary concern and addresses that first.

NO: Find a new dentist if they are not listening to your chief complaint!

Acute first: Dental schools all teach taking care of acute pain in a patient before doing anything else. I am sure if you ask around in your hood you will find a dentist that practices according to this creed!

Absolutely not : The dentist job is to diagnose and treatment plan and of course discuss treatment with the patient and offer to treat the acute condition first , and the end the dentist should pay attention to patient complaint and concerns , you are just looking in the wrong places, ask around word of mouth is the best secret, good luck.

Health first: Make your teeth healthy first, then address the cosmetic procedures.
