I : I am a pediatric eating disorder physician and i would like to go on record as saying that obesity is not child abuse. Frankly we understand so little about the biology of obesity that we are not even sure why anyone gets fat, even when it seems"obvious" that people feed their children poorly. We appear to get fat for genetic and environmental reasons. Of interest are recent articles reporting that other (non-human) mammals who live in close proximity to humans, such as domesticated animals and laboratory animals, are getting fatter as well, even when their food intake is tightly controlled, implying that there may be non-food environmental triggers to increasing obesity (infectious agents? Hormonally active pollutants? Food or cosmetic additives?) until the science is better defined, those of us who do not seem to have the genetic propensity to respond to our environment with ever increasing girth might best be served by adopting an attitude of compassion rather than judgmentalism.

Obesity : Obesity is a disease not abuse. You have to treat the disease, just like any other disease, like diabetes mellitus.

Obesity : Obesity is not child abuse. There have been cases showcased on television in which children's parents permitted morbidly obese children to eat massive quantities of food. It was implied that the parents were engaging in child abuse. Some parents may lack education about proper nutrition and some may lack the financial means to buy nutritious foods for their children. Some parents find it hard to say no to a child with an unsatiable appetite. Some children may take medication or suffer from conditions which impact their weight. Some children may role model parent's dietary habits. There may be a number of things impacting a child's weight, including things which we don't have a good understanding of at this time. I believe that most parents would like to have healthy children.
