When : When someone with diabetes does not have enough Insulin to break down glucose (sugar) in the blood they break down fats for energy instead. This breakdown causes a build-up of acids in the blood known as ketones. These ketones can be smelled on the breath and are a sweet, fruity odor - similar to acetone nail polish removal. This is called diabetic ketoacidosis. People usually have other symptoms such as nausea, vomiting, dry mouth, excessive thirst and urination, stomach pain and flushing. If you think someone might be suffering from diabetic ketoacidosis, this is a medical emergency and you should either call their doctor or go to the emergency room. Good luck!
