When : When someone with diabetes does not have enough Insulin to break down glucose (sugar) in the blood they break down fats for energy instead. This breakdown causes a build-up of acids in the blood known as ketones. These ketones can be smelled on the breath and are a sweet, fruity odor - similar to acetone nail polish remover. This is called diabetic ketoacidosis. People usually have other symptoms such as nausea, vomiting, dry mouth, excessive thirst and urination, stomach pain and flushing. If you think you might be suffering from diabetic ketoacidosis, this is a medical emergency and you should either call your doctor or go to the emergency room. If you are feeling completely fine, you may want to call your doctor during office hours for a urinalysis to check for sugar in your urine. Good luck!

Maybe but...: Everyone's definition of "sweet" will smell different. There are multiple things that can cause a change in breath odor. A common thing is when people go long stretches without eating (a long work day for example). If you only have the breath change, and do not have increased frequency of urine and / or thirst, then diabetes would be unlikely.
