No: The use of video games will not do anything to improve the achievements of your autistic son, although it may calm him for a short time. There may be computer assisted language programs that may be helpful. Aba therapy is probably the most effective therapy for autistic children.

Sometimes: Sometimes this can help with hand eye coordination and be used as a diversion. And give a sense of accomplishment. Beware though that some children can hyperfocus on the video game and almost become addicted to it. 1 university level education expert suggested no more than 10 hours of 'screen time' a week for kids. This would include tv, dvd, computers and video games. Remember moderation is good.

Gotta go with No: Occasionally video games are used as a reward in aba. Tv or video time is not recommended for any child <2 yrs. Old, because they've been proven to delay language in any toddler. Impairments in social communication & reciprocal social interaction must be treated by a human. Technology is not reciprocal & may be "self-stimulating." a few apps can be used like books for joint attention.
