Bipolar : Bipolar disorder is a very complex and a challenging disorder to live with, or deal with from a friend or family member's perspective. A major characteristic of bipolar disorder is major mood swings, which often result in damaged relationships, poor job and/or school performance, and even suicide. The lying and causing family rifts is very common when dealing with a person suffering from this disorder. I will definitely say she is not suffering from a "worsening mental situation" however i will say she needs more intensive treatment and routine follow up with her psychiatrist is definitely in order. Lastly the family may want to consider a family meeting with the psychiatrist with and without the patient in order to get a better understanding of the disorder, and ways to deal with your cousin in a way that will protect them and her as well. Best of luck to you all.

Difficult question: Your question was cut off but i would say that bipolar is one of the most difficult mental illnesses both for the patient and their family. This is because mania, unlike depression, often feels "good" to many people with bipolar and stopping their medication is often such a strong temptation. I would see if the national alliance for mental health (nami) has a family support group near you.
