Usually trauma, but: May be an undiagnosed condition affecting bone structure. Causes of rib fractures in infancy include trauma (including birth trauma), cardiopulmonary resuscitation (CPR), chest surgery, and chest physiotherapy, etc... Underlying conditions such as osteogenesis imperfecta, osteopenia of premature birth, and rickets (vitamin D metabolic problems) can cause infants to be at higher risk of fracture.
