Initial Stages: Typically, night terrors are associated with the earlier phases if sleep and commonly occur before midnight. That is in contrast to night mares, which are associated with later stages of sleep and with rem sleep. Night mares more commonly occur after midnight, although there are exceptions. While an unpleasant nuisance, both night terrors and night mares are normal. Most kids "grow out of" them.
