You : You should see a hand specialist to obtain a diagnosis. It may simply be "sprained" or "jammed" and require no treatment other than passage of time. There also could be fracture (break) in the joint. Proper x-rays should be obtained.

You : You should at least see a hand or orthopedic doctor who can assess whether you need xrays. If you can't get to one of those providers then your own doctor or an urgent care cneter can order xrays too. Swelling may be anything from, a severe contusion, a brusied joint to a fracture. Sometine a small intarticular ( with the joint) fracture can actually be more of a difficult problem if treatment is not sought early. In addition a scrape or contusion of laceration of the skin that is unseen could lead to an infection. Finally even with negative xrays a tendon or ligament injury could cause swelling or discomfort.

As : As noted, you need an proper examination and plain xrays. The possiblities include a fracture of the metacarpal bone underneath that joint or perhaps ligament injuries (either structures called collateral ligaments or saggital hood). Many of these things can be treated easily if diagnosed early -.
