Are there big risks to liposuction?

Depends: It depends on your overall health, and how much liposuction is being done. In general, if you are healthy and do not undergo large volume liposuction, it is a relatively safe procedure. As with any surgical procedure, there are risks. I recommend discussing your personal situation with a board certified plastic surgeon who could explain the risks and come up with the best treatment plan for you.

Serious risks rare: There is a lot of misinformation about the risks of liposuction but the important thing to keep in mind is that although the skin incisions are tiny, it is surgery. Doing it under local anesthesia doesn't make it safer, and it should be done in an accredited surgical facility by a qualified surgeon. A good surgeon will give you a detailed list of the risks and benefits in your particular case.

Liposuction complic: Extremley rarely, from a procedure that is done very commonly with excellent safety margin, there can be life threateining infections, fluid status issues, heart issues, anesthesia complications, fat emboli and clots, and other serious problems. No surgery is without a risk. Discuss this thoroughly with your surgeon if you're considering to have liposuction and if you are deemed to be a candidate.

Uncommon: Most of the serious risks and complications are associated with the general anesthesia and time spent under rather than the actual liposuction itself. There are also specific guidelines about the maximum amount of Lidocaine used and volume of fat that can be safely removed. Cardiac and respiratory complications, shock are the serious risks. Careful screening of the patient needs to be done.

No: Liposuction that is performed by a qualified, experienced surgeon in an appropriate setting carries very few risks. Large volume liposuction (>6-8 liters of fat) carries greater risks.

Yes but few: There are risks to liposuction but if properly perfromed by an experienced individual, the risks should be low and few. Riks do include infection, hematoma, bruising, irregularities, dimpling, overcorrection, undercorrection, skin loss, numbness, pain, etc.

LS risk: Yes! any surgery carries the risk of death. This can happen from anesthesia but if very unlikely if you are healthy and your anesthesiologist is trained/experienced. You could also develop clots in your legs which could break off and travel to your lungs and kill you. This risk is higher in smokers, obese people, those with history of clots or those on hormone treatments.
