Otoplasty : Otoplasty or ear pinning is a very rewarding procedure for the patient and physician. It is typically done once a child reaches 6 years old or older. It does include reshaping the cartilage in most cases using sutures and or sculpting with a knife. There is an incision behind the ear and then the cartilage is reshaped and tucked back. The skin is closed and a dressing placed for 1-3 days then a headband must be worn for a few weeks. Once healed, there is little risk of the skin opening and becoming infection. This is something I have never seen. It is possible for sutures to break or erode through skin but this is rare. Good luck!

Sensitive for weeks: While ear reshaping surgery (otoplasty) may be sensitive in the early weeks following surgery, it rarely lasts longer than that with a high satisfaction rate when performed by a board certified plastic surgeon.
